Without sounding like a lecture to some who might feel I have less than good intentions, I believe that during this political campaign season, it is a good time to reflect on these words from a great American: “It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by the dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions and spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who, at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly; so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.” That’s Teddy Roosevelt speaking at the Sorbonne a century ago in 1910.
How many times have you fallen flat on your face or failed or been told you do not measure up or that you know everything and therefore you can’t relate to what I am saying and that is why no one can teach you anything that you do not already know? How many times have you taken a victory lap? If you are always successful at everything you do, then what’s the point, you or I know everything and do not need to learn anything. This Political Season and America’s Birthday are good times to reflect on the past, not wishing to shut any doors by not dwelling there. What I try to remember is my better nature, the times my prayers were answered after praying to a loving God or higher power to relieve me from the burden of self which taught me to focus on someone else, to lift someone else up, to give someone else a hand up, to help to bring another brother or sister along if I was able to do that. I asked my great aunt before she died what the secret was to her long life, as she lived to be 102 years old and she told me it was because, she worked hard, stayed busy and was a Christian. It is so simple, but yet so hard for some people to grasp the significance of what it means to be an American.
